JUVENILE JUSTICEMedia Arts for Social Justice has fostered relationships with Los Angeles County juvenile justice sites since 2000. These underserved youth have been mentored by MASJ students to create poetic media pieces that make visible their daily struggles of coping with system that disproportionally targets youth of color. Utilizing creative writing and spoken word as a base for production youth have storyboarded, filmed and edited intimate portrayals of life in camp, home, and community. At Camps Afflerbaugh Paige MASJ students led weekly workshops in media production and literacy. Pitzer donated used computers so editing could be done on site. MASJ has an ongoing six year relationship with the Girls and Gangs Mentoring Program by offering weekly Video Diary Workshops as part of the self-reflective creative expression component of the teen girls’ re-entry process. The youth are given small video cameras to record diary entries from home, school, and community life that are then edited together with MASJ students on laptops at the Girls and Gangs sites.
