CAMPS AFFLERBAUGH-PAIGE

Camps Afflerbaugh-Paige is an LA County juvenile probation camp located in La Verne, California that houses male wards ages 13-18 for sentences of 6-18 months. While incarcerated the wards are required to attend the Camp Afflerbaugh-Paige high school, an LA County Office of Education high school. MASJ students led a weekly video poetry and media literacy workshops for youth in Camps AP for three years.

Poetry Video - Camps AP

Teens incarcerated at Camps Afflerbaugh Paige offer up their poetry about their lives, what got them locked up, reflections on their current plight  and hopes for the future.  MASJ students facilitated 12 week poetry workshops  with creative writing and necessitated creative camera work as the teen wards were not allowed to reveal their own identity in their video artworks.

"The opportunity of working with the guys of Camp AP was by far the most challenging and rewarding experience I have had while attending Pitzer College."
