COSTANOAN RUMSEN CARMEL TRIBE

The Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe of Ohlone Peoples' ancestral lands range from the San Francisco Bay to Big Sur. Due to the political climate their  ancestors relocated to Southern California in the early 1860's.  Currently the Tribe is working on several cultural reclamation projects and  continue traditional ceremonial practice.   • MASJ students have been working with the Tribe since 2009 documenting cultural events and workshops, tribal meetings, as part of an on-going documentary project.

Bear Ceremony at Coyote Hills

In this short documentary  Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribal members  describe the significance and impact of spending time on their ancestral lands during their annual Bear Ceremony in Coyote Hills Regional Park.

"As an Anthropology major, I'm extremely cautious about taking people's stories, or culture, and using them for my own ventures. I did't want this to to be what I was doing with whatever footage or stories i captured.  I wanted to make sure I really learned from the group, both through research and developing relationships with individuals, so that I could most accurately share their story."
