POMONA HABLA:

SPEAKING OUT AGAINST OPPRESSION

Organizing community to speak out against discrimination demonstrated in the practices of  Pomona D.U.I. Checkpoints.

"I learned a lot about politics, organizing, and the city of Pomona. In retrospect, the interviews were especially interesting as they showed how everyone was coming to the organization from a sort of different place.  Generally I encounter politics in the classroom, where you look at groups like Pomona Habla and try to figure out how they relate to larger situations of inequality and ways of thinking, so you get this effect that everyone in the group thinks the same way about stuff. In reality though, that’s obviously not true; when you organize around an issue,  people with a spectrum of opinion rally around a set of common demands, and things go in a direction no one can quite anticipate. Part of my experience with the group was a reminder that politics and theory look much more cut and dry in the classroom than in real life."
